Blackberry Moonshine Recipe

 

Blackberry moonshine is a delicious and refreshing summer drink! Perfect as a shot or as an addition to cocktails, this recipe is full of fruity flavor and packs a punch. Warning: this moonshine is strong, so enjoy responsibly!

 

 

We recommend using store-bought moonshine, vodka, or Everclear, as distilling alcohol at home is illegal in the United States. Both fresh and frozen blackberries work—just defrost frozen berries first. Taste fresh blackberries before adding sugar and start with a small amount, adjusting to your preferred sweetness.

Ingredients

For the Moonshine:

  • ¾ cup Ole Smoky moonshine (or vodka/Everclear)
  • 2 cups blackberries
  • Zest of 1 lime
  • Zest of 1 lemon

For the Blackberry Simple Syrup:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar

Instructions

Step 1: Make Blackberry Simple Syrup

  1. Combine 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar in a saucepan over high heat.
  2. Mash and squeeze a few blackberries into the mixture to release their juice.
  3. Stir until the sugar dissolves and the syrup slightly thickens.
  4. Pour the syrup into a mason jar and let it cool to room temperature.
  5. Store in the refrigerator until ready to use.

Step 2: Prepare the Moonshine

  1. In a clean jar, combine 2 cups blackberries, the lime and lemon zest, and ¾ cup moonshine.
  2. Add blackberry simple syrup to taste, starting with a little and adjusting for desired sweetness.
  3. Seal the jar and shake gently.
  4. Refrigerate for 3–5 days to let the flavors infuse, shaking once daily.

Step 3: Strain and Serve

  1. Strain the moonshine through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove solids.
  2. Transfer the liquid to a clean jar or bottle.
  3. Serve over ice, use in cocktails, or enjoy as a bold shot!

Tips

  • Taste berries before adding sugar; adjust sweetness gradually.
  • Use fresh or thawed frozen berries for best results.
  • Properly stored in the fridge, strained moonshine can last for several months.
