Southern-Style Hamburger Steak with Onion Gravy

INGREDIENTS
Hamburger Steaks
1 lb ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
¼ cup bread crumbs
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 large egg
Salt and black pepper, to taste
2 tablespoons olive oil or butter (for frying)
Onion Gravy
1 large onion, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons butter or drippings from pan
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon garlic powder
Salt and black pepper, to taste
INSTRUCTIONS
1️⃣ Make the Patties
In a large bowl, combine:
Ground beef
Bread crumbs
Garlic powder
Onion powder
Worcestershire sauce
Egg
Salt & black pepper
Mix gently just until combined (don’t overmix)
Shape into 4 oval-shaped patties
2️⃣ Pan-Fry the Hamburger Steaks
Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat
Add patties and cook 4–5 minutes per side, until browned
Remove patties from skillet and set aside (keep warm)
3️⃣ Cook the Onions
In the same skillet, add sliced onions
Cook over medium heat 8–10 minutes until soft and golden
Stir occasionally, scraping up browned bits
4️⃣ Make the Gravy
Add butter (if pan is dry)
Sprinkle flour over onions and stir 1 minute
Slowly whisk in beef broth
Add Worcestershire sauce and garlic powder
Simmer 3–5 minutes until thickened
5️⃣ Simmer the Steaks
Return hamburger steaks to the skillet
Spoon gravy over patties
Cover and simmer 10–15 minutes until tender and cooked through

Biscuits or cornbread
