Amish Hamburger Steak Bake
Ingredients
For the Hamburger Steaks:
1½ lbs ground beef
½ tsp garlic powder
½ tsp onion powder
1 tsp salt (or to taste)
½ tsp black pepper
1 egg
½ cup milk
¾ cup breadcrumbs or crushed crackers
For the Gravy & Bake:
1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
1 packet brown gravy mix
1 cup beef broth or water
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
2 tbsp butter
Optional Add-Ins (very common in Amish cooking):
3–4 cups sliced potatoes (russet or Yukon gold)
1 cup sliced mushrooms
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional topping)
Instructions
1️⃣ Prepare the Hamburger Steaks
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a large bowl, mix ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, egg, milk, and breadcrumbs.
Form into 6–8 oval hamburger steaks.
2️⃣ Brown the Steaks
Heat a skillet over medium heat.
Brown the patties on both sides (about 3 minutes per side).
They don’t need to be fully cooked.
Transfer to a plate.
3️⃣ Make the Gravy
In the same skillet, melt butter.
Add sliced onions and cook until soft.
Stir in cream of mushroom soup, gravy mix, and beef broth.
Simmer for 2–3 minutes until smooth.
4️⃣ Assemble the Bake
Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
Layer sliced potatoes on the bottom (if using).
Place hamburger steaks on top.
Add mushrooms if desired.
Pour gravy evenly over everything.
5️⃣ Bake
Cover with foil.
Bake for 45 minutes.
Remove foil, sprinkle cheese on top (optional).
Bake uncovered for 10–15 minutes until bubbly and golden.
Serving Suggestions
Serve with buttered green beans, corn, or fresh bread
Spoon extra gravy over mashed potatoes or rice
