Amygdalota
Traditional Greek Almond Cookies
Description
Amygdalota are classic Greek cookies known for their soft, chewy texture and rich almond flavor. Lightly baked until just golden and finished with a delicate dusting of powdered sugar, these treats are traditionally served at weddings, holidays, and special gatherings.
Ingredients
- 200 g blanched almonds, finely ground
- 150 g granulated sugar
- 2 egg whites (about 60 g), lightly beaten
- Sliced almonds, for topping
- Powdered sugar, for finishing
Method
- Prepare the Dough
In a bowl, combine the ground almonds and sugar. Gradually mix in the beaten egg whites until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms. - Shape the Cookies
Roll small portions of dough into balls or oval shapes and place them on a lined baking tray. - Add the Topping
Gently press a few almond slices onto the top of each cookie. - Bake
Bake in a preheated oven at 170°C (340°F) for 15–20 minutes, until the cookies are lightly golden but still pale. - Finish
Allow the cookies to cool, then generously dust with powdered sugar before serving.
Serving Tip
Amygdalota are best enjoyed once cooled, when their centers remain tender and chewy. Store in an airtight container to keep them soft and fragrant for days.
