Layered Vanilla and Chocolate Custard Dessert
Ingredients
For the Vanilla Custard:
- 2 cups milk
- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Chocolate Custard:
- 2 cups milk
- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
Optional Toppings:
- Whipped cream
- Chocolate shavings or sprinkles
- Fresh berries
Instructions
1. Make the Vanilla Custard:
- In a medium saucepan, combine 2 cups milk and 3 tablespoons sugar. Heat over medium heat until warm (do not boil).
- In a small bowl, mix 2 tablespoons cornstarch with a few tablespoons of cold milk from the saucepan to make a smooth slurry.
- Slowly add the slurry back into the warm milk while stirring continuously.
- Cook for 4–5 minutes until the mixture thickens.
- Remove from heat and stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
- Pour the vanilla custard into serving glasses or a dish as the first layer. Let it cool slightly, then refrigerate for 10–15 minutes to set.
2. Make the Chocolate Custard:
- In a clean saucepan, combine 2 cups milk, 3 tablespoons sugar, and 2 tablespoons cocoa powder. Heat until warm.
- Mix 2 tablespoons cornstarch with a little cold milk to make a slurry and add it slowly to the warm mixture, stirring constantly.
- Cook for 4–5 minutes until thickened.
- Let the chocolate custard cool slightly.
3. Assemble the Dessert:
- Gently pour the chocolate custard over the set vanilla layer.
- Smooth the top with a spatula and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until fully set.
4. Serve:
- Top with whipped cream, chocolate shavings, or fresh berries if desired.
- Serve chilled and enjoy!
