Oven-Baked 3-Ingredient Brown Gravy Potato Bake

Oven-Baked 3-Ingredient Brown Gravy Potato Bake

My grandpa used to bring this dish to the Sunday table, and every time, not a single bite was left behind. It’s the definition of simple comfort—just three humble ingredients coming together to create something rich, warm, and deeply satisfying. This oven-baked brown gravy potato casserole is inspired by classic Midwestern home cooking, where practicality meets flavor in the best way.

Thinly sliced potatoes are layered into a baking dish, dotted with butter, and smothered in savory brown gravy. As it bakes, the potatoes turn tender while the gravy thickens and soaks into every layer, creating a soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture with a rich, comforting taste.

This dish pairs beautifully with hearty mains like pot roast, roasted chicken, or meatloaf. Add a fresh green side—like steamed green beans, roasted Brussels sprouts, or a crisp salad with vinaigrette—to balance the richness. Don’t forget warm rolls or crusty bread to soak up every last bit of that delicious gravy.

Servings: 6

Ingredients:

5–6 medium potatoes, thinly sliced

2 cups canned brown gravy

3 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces

Instructions:

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Lightly grease a medium-sized baking dish.

Layer the potatoes evenly in the dish, slightly overlapping each slice.

Add butter by scattering small pieces over the potatoes.

Pour the gravy evenly over the entire dish, making sure all the potatoes are well coated.

Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.

Uncover and continue baking for another 25–30 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender and the top is lightly golden.

Rest before serving for 5–10 minutes to allow the gravy to thicken.

Tips & Variations:

Add sliced onions or garlic between the layers for extra flavor.

Sprinkle shredded cheese on top during the last 10 minutes for a richer version.

For a crispier top, broil for 2–3 minutes at the end.
