Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions
Tender beef strips, caramelized onions, and a rich, glossy pepper sauce — this dish tastes just like takeout but even better homemade!
Ingredients
For the Steak Marinade
- 1 lb (450 g) flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp minced garlic
- ½ tsp black pepper
For the Stir-Fry
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, sliced
- 1 red bell pepper, sliced (optional)
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- For the Sauce
- ¼ cup soy sauce
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- ½ cup beef broth or water
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp chili flakes (optional for heat)
Instructions
Marinate the Steak
- In a bowl, mix soy sauce, cornstarch, oil, sugar, garlic, and black pepper.
- Add the sliced steak and coat well.
- Let it marinate 15–30 minutes (or longer for more flavor).
Prepare the Sauce
In a small bowl, whisk together:
- Soy sauce
- Oyster sauce
- Hoisin sauce
- Cornstarch
- Beef broth
- Sesame oil
- Black pepper
Set aside.
Stir-Fry the Veggies
- Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large pan or wok over high heat.
- Add onions and peppers.
- Stir-fry 3–4 minutes until slightly softened but still crisp.
- Remove them from the pan.
Sear the Steak
- Add another 1 tbsp oil.
- Add the marinated steak in a single layer.
- Cook 2–3 minutes until browned.
- Flip and cook another minute.
Combine Everything
- Add the veggies back to the pan.
- Pour in the sauce.
- Stir and cook until the sauce becomes thick, glossy, and sizzling.
Serve
Serve hot over steamed rice or noodles.
Top with sesame seeds or green onions if you like.
