Cheesy Sloppy Joe Toast

Ingredients

Sloppy Joe Filling

1 pound (450 g) ground beef

½ yellow onion, finely diced

8 oz (225 g) tomato sauce

1 teaspoon yellow mustard

2 tablespoons ketchup

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

½ teaspoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon paprika

Salt and black pepper, to taste

Toast & Cheese

6–8 slices thick sandwich bread or Texas toast

2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

(or mozzarella / Monterey Jack)

1 tablespoon butter (optional, for toasting)

Optional Add-Ins

¼ teaspoon chili flakes or cayenne (heat)

¼ cup diced bell pepper

1 tablespoon hot sauce

 

 

 

 

Instructions

1️⃣ Cook the Beef

Heat a large skillet over medium heat.

Add ground beef and diced onion.

Cook 6–8 minutes, breaking up the meat, until beef is browned and onion is soft.

Drain excess grease if needed.

2️⃣ Make the Sloppy Joe Sauce

Stir in tomato sauce, mustard, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.

Reduce heat to low–medium.

Simmer 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thick and rich.

3️⃣ Toast the Bread

Preheat oven broiler or oven to 400°F (205°C).

Lightly butter bread slices (optional).

Toast on a baking sheet for 3–4 minutes, just until lightly crisp.

4️⃣ Assemble

Spoon generous amounts of sloppy joe mixture onto each toast.

Sprinkle heavily with shredded cheese.

5️⃣ Melt the Cheese

Return to oven.

Bake 5–7 minutes, or broil 1–2 minutes, until cheese is melted, bubbly, and slightly golden.

6️⃣ Serve

Let cool for 2 minutes.

Serve hot and messy
