Steak Dinner with Crab Cakes & Loaded Red Skin Mashed Potatoes
Ingredients
For the Steak
1 large ribeye or New York strip steak
1 tbsp olive oil
Salt and black pepper, to taste
2 tbsp butter
2 cloves garlic, smashed
1–2 sprigs fresh rosemary or thyme (optional)
For the Crab Cakes
1 lb lump crab meat
1/3 cup mayonnaise
1 egg
1 tsp Dijon mustard
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp Old Bay seasoning
1/2 cup breadcrumbs (plus more if needed)
2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
1 tbsp lemon juice
Salt and pepper to taste
2 tbsp oil or butter for frying
For the Loaded Red Skin Mashed Potatoes
2 lbs red potatoes, washed and cut into chunks
1/2 cup milk (or more as needed)
4 tbsp butter
1/2 cup sour cream
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
4 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
2 tbsp green onions, chopped
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
1. Make the Loaded Red Skin Mashed Potatoes
Place the red potatoes in a large pot and cover with salted water.
Bring to a boil and cook for 15–20 minutes, until fork-tender.
Drain and return the potatoes to the pot.
Add butter, milk, and sour cream, then mash until creamy but still slightly chunky.
Stir in cheddar cheese, bacon, and green onions.
Season with salt and pepper, cover, and keep warm.
2. Prepare the Crab Cakes
In a bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, egg, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, and Old Bay.
Gently fold in crab meat, breadcrumbs, parsley, salt, and pepper.
Form mixture into 6 small crab cakes.
Heat oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat.
Cook crab cakes 3–4 minutes per side, until golden brown and heated through.
Set aside on a plate.
3. Cook the Steak
Pat the steak dry and season generously with salt and black pepper.
Heat olive oil in a heavy skillet over medium-high heat.
Sear the steak 3–5 minutes per side depending on thickness and preferred doneness.
Add butter, garlic, and herbs to the pan.
Spoon the melted butter over the steak for 1–2 minutes.
Remove from heat and let the steak rest for 5 minutes before slicing.
4. Assemble the Dinner
Place the steak on a plate.
Add a scoop of loaded red skin mashed potatoes.
Serve with two crab cakes on the side.
Optional: garnish with extra parsley or lemon wedges.
Optional Serving Ideas
Add steamed asparagus or roasted broccoli.
Serve crab cakes with lemon aioli or tartar sauce.
Top the steak with a garlic herb butter for extra flavor.
