This rustic, French-inspired bake turns simple ingredients into something irresistibly cozy. Tender boiled potatoes are layered with savory meatballs, sweet sautéed onions, and melted cheese, then baked until golden and bubbling. It’s the kind of hearty dish that feels both homey and indulgent—perfect for an easy dinner.
Ingredients (Serves 3–4)
3 large potatoes, peeled and sliced
1 white onion, finely chopped
300 g ground beef (or prepared meatballs)
1 cup shredded cheese (Gruyère, Emmental, or mozzarella)
2 tablespoons olive oil or butter
1 teaspoon dried herbs (thyme or Herbes de Provence)
Salt and black pepper, to taste
Instructions
1. Boil the Potatoes
Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Add the sliced potatoes and cook for about 8–10 minutes until just tender but not falling apart. Drain and set aside.
2. Prepare the Meat Mixture
In a skillet, heat olive oil or butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until soft and lightly golden. Add the ground beef (or meatballs) and cook until browned. Season with salt, pepper, and herbs.
3. Assemble the Dish
Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F). In a greased baking dish, arrange a layer of potatoes, followed by the meat and onion mixture. Repeat layers if needed.
4. Add the Cheese
Sprinkle the shredded cheese generously over the top, covering the entire dish.
5. Bake to Perfection
Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden brown.
Serving Suggestions
Serve hot, straight from the oven, with a fresh green salad or crusty bread on the side. For extra richness, you can add a splash of cream before baking or a pinch of nutmeg for a classic French touch.
Simple, satisfying, and full of flavor—this cheesy potato and meatball bake is the perfect comfort meal when you want something warm and delicious without too much effort.
