HAMBURGER STEW – Loved by Kids & Adults!

Hearty, cozy, and packed with flavor—this classic hamburger stew is perfect for family dinners, especially on cool days. It’s filling, budget-friendly, and super comforting.

 

 

 

Ingredients (Serves 6–8)

Meat & Oil

1½ lbs (700 g) ground beef (lean preferred)

1 tbsp olive oil (optional, if beef is very lean)

Vegetables

1 large onion, diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

3–4 medium potatoes, peeled & diced

3 carrots, sliced

2 celery stalks, sliced

1 cup green beans (fresh or frozen)

1 cup corn (optional, kids love it!)

1 cup peas (optional)

Liquids

4 cups beef broth

2 cups water (or more broth for richer flavor)

1 (14.5 oz / 400 g) can diced tomatoes (with juice)

2 tbsp tomato paste

Seasonings

1 tsp salt (adjust to taste)

½ tsp black pepper

1 tsp paprika

½ tsp dried thyme

½ tsp dried oregano

1 bay leaf

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp sugar (optional, balances acidity)

Thickening (Optional)

2 tbsp cornstarch + 2 tbsp cold water

or

2 tbsp flour

Garnish (Optional)

Fresh parsley, chopped

 

 

 

Instructions

1️⃣ Brown the Beef

Heat a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.

Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks.

Drain excess fat if needed.

Add olive oil if beef is very lean.

2️⃣ Add Aromatics

Stir in onion and cook 3–4 minutes until soft.

Add garlic and cook 30 seconds until fragrant.

3️⃣ Build the Flavor

Mix in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, thyme, oregano, salt, pepper, and sugar.

Stir well and cook 1–2 minutes to deepen flavor.

4️⃣ Add Veggies & Liquids

Add potatoes, carrots, celery, green beans, corn, and peas.

Pour in beef broth, water, and diced tomatoes.

Add bay leaf and stir.

5️⃣ Simmer

Bring to a gentle boil.

Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 30–40 minutes until vegetables are tender.

6️⃣ Thicken (Optional)

If you want a thicker stew:

Mix cornstarch with cold water and stir into stew.

Simmer 5 more minutes until thickened.

Taste and adjust seasoning.

7️⃣ Finish

Remove bay leaf.

Sprinkle with fresh parsley if desired.

 

 

 

Serving Ideas

Serve with crusty bread or warm dinner rolls

Great with rice or mashed potatoes

Add shredded cheese on top for kids

Variations

Cheesy Hamburger Stew: Stir in 1 cup shredded cheddar at the end

Italian Style: Add basil and a pinch of red pepper flakes

Extra Veggie: Add zucchini or bell peppers

Slow Cooker: Brown beef first, then cook on LOW 6–8 hours or HIGH 3–4 hours
