Slow Cooker 4-Ingredient Texas Hash
This simple, old-fashioned meal is a great budget-friendly family dinner. With just four basic ingredients, the slow cooker turns ground beef, rice, onions, and tomato soup into a warm, hearty dish that’s filling and comforting.
Servings: 6
Ingredients
1 lb (450 g) ground beef
1 medium onion, finely chopped
1 cup uncooked long-grain white rice
1 can (10.5 oz / 300 g) condensed tomato soup
2 cups water
(Only four main ingredients are required; water is used to cook the rice.)
Instructions
Brown the beef
In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef with the chopped onion until the beef is browned and the onion becomes soft.
Drain any excess fat.
Add to slow cooker
Transfer the beef and onion mixture to the slow cooker.
Add rice and soup
Stir in the uncooked rice. In a bowl, mix the tomato soup with 2 cups of water, then pour it over the rice and beef mixture.
Mix well
Stir everything together so the rice is evenly distributed.
Cook
Cover and cook:
LOW: 4–5 hours
HIGH: 2–3 hours
The rice should be tender and the mixture thick and saucy.
Serve
Stir once before serving and spoon the Texas hash onto plates while hot.
Serving Ideas
Serve straight from the slow cooker with:
Green salad or steamed vegetables
Buttered toast or garlic bread
Warm dinner rolls
You can also sprinkle shredded cheese, add a dollop of sour cream, or drizzle hot sauce on top.
Tips & Variations
Replace half the ground beef with ground turkey for a lighter version.
Add 1–2 cups frozen peas, carrots, or corn during the last 30 minutes of cooking.
For a little heat, mix chili powder or hot sauce into the tomato soup before cooking.
Storage:
Leftovers keep well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. When reheating, add a small splash of water to keep the rice moist.
