¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)

¼ teaspoon salt

Instructions

Grease the inside of your slow cooker with butter or nonstick cooking spray.

Place the bread cubes evenly into the slow cooker.

In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, brown sugar, granulated sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and melted butter until smooth.

Pour the custard evenly over the bread, gently pressing the bread down so it absorbs the mixture. Let it rest for 10–15 minutes.

If using the topping, combine the melted butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon, then sprinkle over the casserole along with the nuts.

Cover and cook on Low for 2½–3 hours or High for 1½–2 hours, until the center is set and the edges are lightly golden.

Turn off the slow cooker and let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Dust with powdered sugar and serve warm with maple syrup, fresh berries, or whipped cream.

Tips

Slightly stale bread creates the best texture.

Brioche or challah makes an extra-rich version.

Add raisins, diced apples, or chocolate chips for delicious variations.

Refrigerate leftovers and reheat for a quick breakfast.
