Ingredients

Olive oil

1 large onion, finely chopped

1 carrot, grated

1 can sardines in oil (tuna can also be used)

5 medium potatoes, peeled and chopped

1 teaspoon salt

150 ml milk

30 g butter

100 g shredded cheese

Breadcrumbs (for topping)

1 bunch green onions, chopped

1 egg

2 tablespoons sour cream

Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

Cook the Potatoes

Boil the potatoes in salted water until soft. Drain well, then mash with the milk and butter until smooth and creamy.

Prepare the Filling

Heat a drizzle of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté the chopped onion until soft and translucent. Add the grated carrot and cook for 2–3 minutes.

Add the Sardines

Add the sardines with a little of their oil and gently break them apart with a fork. Stir in the chopped green onions and season with salt and pepper.

Make the Creamy Mixture

In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and sour cream. Add this mixture to the sardine filling and stir well.

Assemble the Bake

Grease a baking dish lightly with olive oil. Spread half of the mashed potatoes on the bottom, add the sardine mixture, then cover with the remaining mashed potatoes.

Add the Topping

Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the top, followed by a light layer of breadcrumbs for extra crunch.

Bake

Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (360°F) for 30–40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.

Serve & Enjoy

Let the casserole rest for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy warm with a fresh salad or your favorite vegetables.

Serving Tip

A squeeze of fresh lemon juice on top adds a bright flavor that pairs perfectly with the sardines and creamy potatoes!
