Ingredients
For the Salisbury Steak Patties
1 lb (450 g) ground beef
1/2 cup breadcrumbs (preferably golden or panko)
2 tbsp ketchup
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1/4 cup finely minced onion
1 egg
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
For the Gravy (The Secret Sauce)
2 tbsp butter
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 can (10–12 oz) beef gravy
1 tsp Dijon mustard
1/4 cup beef broth
1 tsp cornstarch (optional, for thickening)
Optional: 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms
Instructions
1. Prepare the patties
In a large bowl combine:
ground beef
breadcrumbs
ketchup
Worcestershire sauce
minced onion
egg
salt and pepper
Mix gently until just combined. Do not overmix or the patties may become tough.
Form the mixture into 4 thick oval patties.
2. Brown the patties
Heat a large skillet over medium heat.
Add:
2 tbsp butter
minced garlic
Once the butter melts and becomes fragrant, place the patties in the skillet.
Cook for 4–5 minutes per side until nicely browned.
The patties do not need to be fully cooked yet.
Remove them from the skillet and set aside on a plate.
3. Make the gravy
Do not drain the skillet—those browned bits add flavor.
Add to the skillet:
beef gravy
Dijon mustard
beef broth
Whisk everything together while scraping the bottom of the pan.
If you want thicker gravy, mix 1 tsp cornstarch with 1 tbsp cold water and stir it into the sauce.
Let the gravy simmer for 3–4 minutes.
4. Simmer the steaks
Return the patties to the skillet.
Spoon the gravy over the top and let them simmer in the sauce for 8–10 minutes, or until the patties are fully cooked and the gravy becomes thick, glossy, and rich.
How to Serve
Serve the Salisbury steak hot with:
