Ingredients

3 medium fresh zucchinis, unpeeled and thinly sliced

1/2 onion, finely chopped

1 garlic clove, minced

300 g ground beef (or a beef and veal mix)

200 ml heavy cream

1/2 cup (50 g) grated Emmental or mozzarella cheese

2 tablespoons olive oil

Salt and black pepper, to taste

1/2 teaspoon dried oregano or Italian seasoning (optional)

A pinch of nutmeg (optional, for extra flavor)

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Lightly grease a baking dish.

Prepare the zucchini

Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the sliced zucchini and sauté for 5–7 minutes until slightly tender. Season lightly with salt and pepper, then set aside.

Cook the beef mixture

In the same pan, heat the remaining olive oil. Add the chopped onion and cook until soft and translucent. Stir in the garlic and cook for another minute.

Add the ground beef, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned. Season with salt, pepper, and oregano if using.

Assemble the gratin

In the prepared baking dish, layer half of the zucchini slices. Spread the cooked beef mixture evenly over the top, then cover with the remaining zucchini.

Add the creamy topping

Pour the heavy cream evenly over the dish. Sprinkle the grated cheese on top and add a pinch of nutmeg if desired.

Bake to perfection

Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the top is golden, bubbly, and slightly crisp.

Serve and enjoy

Let the gratin rest for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy it warm with a fresh salad or crusty bread.

Tips for Extra Flavor

Mix in a spoonful of tomato sauce with the beef for a richer taste.

Use a blend of cheeses for a deeper, more complex flavor.

This dish is creamy, satisfying, and packed with flavor—perfect for a comforting lunch or dinner.
