Foolproof Homemade Bread

Soft, Fluffy, and Better Than the Bakery

This simple homemade bread recipe is perfect for beginners. It’s soft on the inside, golden on the outside, and smells absolutely amazing while baking. Once you try it warm with fresh butter, you may never want store-bought bread again!

Ingredients

1 cup warm milk (about 110°F / 43°C)

½ cup warm water (about 110°F / 43°C)

2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)

¼ cup granulated sugar

2 tablespoons butter, melted

1 teaspoon salt

4–4½ cups all-purpose flour

Step-by-Step Instructions

1️⃣ Activate the Yeast

In a large mixing bowl:

Combine warm milk and warm water.

Sprinkle yeast over the top.

Add sugar and gently stir.

Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.

If it doesn’t foam, the yeast may be expired or the liquid too hot/cold.

2️⃣ Mix the Dough

Add:

Melted butter

Salt

3 cups of flour

Mix until combined.

Gradually add remaining flour (½ cup at a time) until a soft dough forms.

The dough should be slightly tacky but not sticky.

3️⃣ Knead the Dough

Turn onto a lightly floured surface.

Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

If using a stand mixer: knead with a dough hook for about 5–6 minutes.

4️⃣ First Rise

Place dough in a lightly greased bowl.

Cover with a clean towel or plastic wrap.

Let rise in a warm place for 1–1½ hours, or until doubled in size.

5️⃣ Shape the Loaf

Punch down the dough gently.

Shape into a loaf and place into a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.

6️⃣ Second Rise

Cover loosely and let rise again for 30–45 minutes, until the dough rises just above the pan edge.

7️⃣ Bake

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until:

Top is golden brown

Bread sounds hollow when tapped

Internal temperature reaches about 190°F (88°C)

8️⃣ Finish

Remove from pan and cool on a wire rack.

Brush the top with melted butter for a soft crust.

Let cool at least 15–20 minutes before slicing (if you can wait ).
