Date Night Chocolate Cherry Bars

Date Night Chocolate Cherry Bars (The 4-Ingredient Dessert He’ll Never Stop Asking For)
This simple little pan of chocolate cherry bars has earned a permanent spot in our kitchen as the ultimate “date night classic.” It goes all the way back to the late ’80s—when desserts had to be quick, budget-friendly, and still feel a little special.
With just a boxed cake mix, cherry pie filling, eggs, and chocolate chips, this recipe turns basic pantry staples into rich, fudgy bars packed with juicy cherries and melty chocolate. No frosting, no mixer, no stress—just a nostalgic dessert that fills the house with the smell of something warm, sweet, and homemade.
Ingredients (Serves 12)
1 (15.25–16.5 oz) box chocolate cake mix (devil’s food or chocolate)
2 large eggs
1 (21 oz) can cherry pie filling
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Instructions
Prepare the Pan
Line a 9×13-inch baking pan with aluminum foil, leaving extra overhang for easy lifting. Lightly grease with butter or nonstick spray.
Preheat the Oven
Set oven to 350°F (175°C) so it’s ready once your batter is mixed.
Mix the Base
In a large bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix and eggs. Stir until mostly combined—the mixture will be thick and slightly crumbly.
Add the Cherries
Fold in the entire can of cherry pie filling, including the syrup. Mix gently until the batter becomes thick, glossy, and evenly studded with cherries.
Fill the Pan
Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan, smoothing it into the corners with a spatula.
Add Chocolate Chips
Sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the top and gently press them into the batter.
Bake
Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the center is set and a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs.
Cool & Slice
Let the bars cool until slightly warm, then lift them out using the foil and cut into squares.
