Hamburger Steak with Gravy
Ingredients
- 1 (10½ oz) can Campbell’s French Onion Soup
- 1½ lbs ground beef
- ½ cup dry breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup water
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil or butter
- Salt and black pepper — to taste
(Optional)
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (for extra flavor)
- Fresh parsley — for garnish
Instructions
- Prepare the Beef Mixture:
In a large bowl, combine:- Ground beef
- Breadcrumbs
- Egg
- ¼ cup of the French onion soup (reserve the rest for the gravy)
Mix well until blended.
- Form Patties:
Shape the mixture into 4 to 6 patties (about ¾ inch thick). - Cook the Patties:
Heat oil (or butter) in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Add patties and cook for 4–5 minutes per side, or until browned.
Remove from the skillet and set aside. - Make the Gravy:
Drain any excess fat from the pan.
In the same skillet, stir in the remaining soup and 1 tablespoon of flour.
Gradually add ¼ cup water, stirring until smooth.
Cook over medium heat, stirring often, until the mixture thickens into a rich gravy (about 3–4 minutes). - Simmer Everything Together:
Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet.
Spoon gravy over the top.
Cover and simmer for 10 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through. - Serve:
Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles.
Spoon the onion gravy over the top and sprinkle with parsley if desired.
Serving Suggestions
- Perfect sides: mashed potatoes, green beans, steamed broccoli, or buttered corn.
- Add a little Worcestershire sauce or garlic powder to the beef for extra depth of flavor.
