Hamburger Steak with Gravy

Hamburger Steak with Gravy

Ingredients

  • 1 (10½ oz) can Campbell’s French Onion Soup
  • 1½ lbs ground beef
  • ½ cup dry breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil or butter
  • Salt and black pepper — to taste

(Optional)

  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (for extra flavor)
  • Fresh parsley — for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Beef Mixture:
    In a large bowl, combine:

    • Ground beef
    • Breadcrumbs
    • Egg
    • ¼ cup of the French onion soup (reserve the rest for the gravy)
      Mix well until blended.
  2. Form Patties:
Shape the mixture into 4 to 6 patties (about ¾ inch thick).
  3. Cook the Patties:
Heat oil (or butter) in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Add patties and cook for 4–5 minutes per side, or until browned.
Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  4. Make the Gravy:
Drain any excess fat from the pan.
In the same skillet, stir in the remaining soup and 1 tablespoon of flour.
Gradually add ¼ cup water, stirring until smooth.
Cook over medium heat, stirring often, until the mixture thickens into a rich gravy (about 3–4 minutes).
  5. Simmer Everything Together:
Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet.
    Spoon gravy over the top.
Cover and simmer for 10 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through.
  6. Serve:
Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles.
Spoon the onion gravy over the top and sprinkle with parsley if desired.

Serving Suggestions

  • Perfect sides: mashed potatoes, green beans, steamed broccoli, or buttered corn.
  • Add a little Worcestershire sauce or garlic powder to the beef for extra depth of flavor.
