Traditional French Stuffed Cabbage Rolls

🛒 Ingredients

For the Cabbage Rolls:

1 large green cabbage

500 g ground beef

250 g ground pork

1 onion, finely chopped

2 garlic cloves, minced

1 carrot, grated

100 g cooked rice

1 egg

2 tablespoons parsley, chopped

Salt and black pepper, to taste

1 teaspoon dried thyme

 

 

 

For the Sauce:

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 onion, sliced

2 garlic cloves, minced

400 g crushed tomatoes

2 tablespoons tomato paste

500 ml beef or vegetable broth

1 bay leaf

1 teaspoon Herbes de Provence

Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

1️⃣ Prepare the Cabbage

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Carefully remove the cabbage leaves and blanch them for 2–3 minutes until soft and flexible. Drain and let cool.

2️⃣ Make the Filling

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, pork, onion, garlic, grated carrot, cooked rice, egg, parsley, thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.

3️⃣ Assemble the Rolls

Place a spoonful of filling onto each cabbage leaf. Fold in the sides and roll tightly like a parcel.

4️⃣ Prepare the Sauce

Heat olive oil in a large Dutch oven or deep pan. Sauté the onion until soft, then add garlic. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, broth, bay leaf, and herbs. Simmer for 5 minutes.

5️⃣ Cook Slowly

Arrange the cabbage rolls seam-side down in the sauce. Cover and simmer gently for 1½ to 2 hours until the cabbage is tender and the filling is perfectly cooked.
