Amish “Snow Day” Sugar Custard (Slow Cooker, 3 Ingredients)

Amish “Snow Day” Sugar Custard (Slow Cooker, 3 Ingredients)

A cozy, old-fashioned dessert made with just three pantry staples. This custard cooks gently in a slow cooker, giving it a smooth, silky texture and mild sweetness. It’s simple comfort food—perfect for cold days when you want something warm without much work.

Ingredients

(Serves 4–6)

3 cups whole milk

4 large eggs

1/2 cup granulated sugar

Optional (for serving):

Ground cinnamon or nutmeg

Fresh berries or sliced fruit

Crumbled graham crackers or butter cookies

Instructions

Prepare the slow cooker

Lightly grease 4–6 ramekins or a small heat-safe baking dish that fits inside your slow cooker.

Mix the custard base

In a bowl, whisk together the eggs and sugar until smooth and slightly pale.

Add the milk

Slowly whisk in the milk until fully combined.

Fill the dishes

Pour the custard mixture evenly into the ramekins or baking dish.

Set up the slow cooker

Place the ramekins inside the slow cooker. Pour hot water into the cooker around them until it reaches about halfway up the sides (this gentle heat helps the custard cook evenly).

Cook

Cover and cook on LOW for 2–3 hours, until the custard is set but still slightly jiggly in the center.

Cool

Carefully remove the ramekins. Let them cool at room temperature, then refrigerate for 1–2 hours if you prefer chilled custard.

How to Serve

Serve slightly warm or chilled.

Sprinkle with cinnamon or nutmeg for a traditional touch.

Add fresh berries, sliced peaches, or apples for a fruity contrast.

For crunch, top with crumbled graham crackers or shortbread.

Variations & Tips

Richer custard:

Replace 1 cup of milk with heavy cream for a thicker, richer texture.

Light flavor boost:

Add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract or a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the mixture.

Lighter version:

Use 2% milk, but chill the custard well so it firms up nicely.

For a crowd:

Double the recipe and cook it in a larger baking dish inside the slow cooker, then scoop servings
