Ingredients

Salisbury Steaks

500 g ground beef

½ cup breadcrumbs

1 large egg

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon onion powder

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

1 tablespoon oil (for frying)

Onion Gravy

2 tablespoons butter or oil

1 large onion, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 cups beef broth (warm)

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Salt and black pepper, to taste

Optional: ½ teaspoon thyme or parsley (for extra flavor)

Instructions

1️⃣ Make the Steak Patties

In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.

Mix gently until just combined (don’t overmix).

Shape into 4 oval patties, about 1 inch thick.

2️⃣ Brown the Steaks

Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

Add patties and cook 4–5 minutes per side until nicely browned.

Remove patties from skillet and set aside (they’ll finish cooking in the gravy).

3️⃣ Cook the Onions

In the same skillet, add butter or oil.

Add sliced onions and cook over medium-low heat for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden.

4️⃣ Make the Gravy

Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir well.

Cook for 1 minute to remove raw flour taste.

Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring constantly.

Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and herbs if using.

Simmer until gravy thickens (about 3–5 minutes).

5️⃣ Simmer the Steaks

Return the steak patties to the skillet.

Spoon gravy over the patties.

Cover and simmer on low heat for 10–12 minutes, until steaks are cooked through and tender.

6️⃣ Serve

Serve hot with plenty of onion gravy on top.

Best Side Dishes

Creamy mashed potatoes

Steamed rice

Buttered noodles

Green beans or peas

Fresh bread to soak up the gravy

Pro Tips

Use 80/20 ground beef for the juiciest steaks.

If gravy gets too thick, add a splash of broth.

Don’t press the patties while cooking — keeps them juicy.

Variations

Mushroom Onion Gravy: Add sliced mushrooms with onions

Extra Rich: Add 1 tablespoon cream to gravy

Oven Finish: Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 15 minutes after browning
