Grandma’s 4-Ingredient Chicken Royale Bake – A Vintage Potluck Favorite Everyone Loves

Some recipes never go out of style, and this 4-Ingredient Chicken Royale Bake is one of them. Inspired by a beloved 1960s church cookbook classic, this cozy casserole has been bringing families together for generations. With just four simple pantry ingredients, you can create juicy baked chicken covered in a rich, creamy mushroom sauce and finished with a crispy golden onion topping.

It’s the kind of comforting meal that looks special enough for Sunday dinner but is easy enough to prepare on a busy weeknight. Every bite is warm, creamy, and packed with nostalgic homemade flavor.

Ingredients

4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts

1 (10.5 oz / 300 g) can condensed golden mushroom soup

1 cup French fried crispy onions, divided

½ teaspoon black pepper (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

Arrange the chicken breasts in a single layer in the prepared baking dish.

Spread the condensed golden mushroom soup evenly over each piece of chicken.

Sprinkle half of the crispy fried onions over the top.

Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 35–40 minutes.

Remove the foil, sprinkle the remaining crispy onions over the casserole, and continue baking for 10–15 minutes, or until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) and the onions are golden and crisp.

Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Serving Suggestions

Serve this comforting Chicken Royale over fluffy white rice, creamy mashed potatoes, buttered egg noodles, or steamed rice to soak up every drop of the delicious mushroom sauce. Pair it with steamed green beans, roasted broccoli, sweet peas, or a crisp garden salad for a complete family meal. Warm dinner rolls or homemade biscuits are perfect for enjoying every bit of the rich, savory gravy.

Tips

Use thin chicken breasts or pound thicker pieces for even cooking.

Add sliced mushrooms for extra earthy flavor.

Sprinkle shredded cheddar or Swiss cheese on top during the last 10 minutes for an extra indulgent twist.

Leftovers keep well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat beautifully.
