Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 20–25 minutes

Servings: 4

Ingredients

For the Burgers:

1½ pounds ground beef (80/20 or 85/15 recommended)

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon black pepper

For the Mushroom Topping:

8 ounces fresh mushrooms, sliced

1 tablespoon butter

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 small onion, thinly sliced (optional but delicious!)

½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon black pepper

4 slices Swiss cheese

Optional Add-Ins:

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

Fresh thyme or parsley

Burger buns for serving

Instructions

1️⃣ Prepare the Mushroom Mixture

Heat butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.

Add sliced mushrooms (and onions if using).

Cook for 6–8 minutes until softened and lightly browned.

Season with salt and pepper.

Remove from heat and set aside.

2️⃣ Make the Burger Patties

In a large bowl, gently combine ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.

Mix just until combined — do not overwork the meat.

Divide into 4 equal portions and shape into patties slightly larger than your buns.

Press a small indentation in the center of each patty (prevents puffing).

3️⃣ Assemble the Foil Packets

Preheat grill to medium (about 375–400°F) OR oven to 400°F (200°C).

Tear 4 large sheets of heavy-duty foil.

Place one burger patty in the center of each sheet.

Spoon mushroom mixture generously over each patty.

Fold foil tightly around each burger, sealing edges well.

4️⃣ Cook

On the Grill:

Place foil packets on grill.

Cook 20–25 minutes, flipping once halfway through.

In the Oven:

Place packets on a baking sheet.

Bake 20–25 minutes until internal temp reaches 160°F (71°C).

5️⃣ Add the Cheese

Carefully open packets (watch for steam!).

Place a slice of Swiss cheese on each burger.

Leave packets open and return to grill/oven for 1–2 minutes until cheese melts.

Serve

Toast burger buns if desired.

Place burger and mushrooms onto buns.

Add lettuce, tomato, mustard, or mayo if you like.

Campfire Version

Place foil packets over hot coals (not direct flames). Cook 20–25 minutes, flipping halfway.

Tips for Extra Flavor

Add a splash of beef broth inside each packet for extra juiciness.

Mix a little shredded Swiss into the burger meat for double cheese
