Old-Fashioned Beef & Pearl Onion Casserole (Cozy 4-Ingredient Family Classic)

This timeless casserole is the kind of dish that never goes out of style—simple, hearty, and full of rich, slow-cooked flavor. Tender chunks of beef bake gently with sweet pearl onions in a savory, comforting gravy, all made with just a handful of pantry staples. It’s the perfect no-fuss meal for family gatherings, cozy weekends, or whenever you’re craving something warm and nostalgic.

Ingredients (Serves 6)

1 ½ to 2 lbs stew beef, cut into chunks

1 bag (12–16 oz) frozen pearl onions

1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup (or beefy mushroom)

1 packet dry onion soup mix

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C). Lightly grease a large casserole dish or baking pan.

Assemble the casserole:

Spread the stew beef evenly in the dish. Scatter the frozen pearl onions over the top.

Add the sauce:

In a small bowl, mix the condensed soup with the dry onion soup mix until combined. Spoon and spread this mixture evenly over the beef and onions.

Cover and bake:

Cover tightly with foil or a lid and bake for 2 to 2½ hours, or until the beef is fork-tender and the onions are soft and caramelized.

Finish and serve:

Give everything a gentle stir before serving to coat the beef in the rich gravy.

Serving Suggestions

Serve this comforting casserole hot with creamy mashed potatoes, buttered egg noodles, or fluffy white rice to soak up every bit of the savory sauce. Add a side of green beans or a crisp salad with vinaigrette to balance the richness.

Warm dinner rolls or slices of crusty bread are perfect for mopping up the gravy—just like at a classic family gathering.

Simple, reliable, and deeply satisfying, this dish is proof that the best recipes are often the ones passed down and shared around the table.
