Slow Cooker Amish Cabbage Noodles (4-Ingredient Comfort Dish)

Slow Cooker Amish Cabbage Noodles (4-Ingredient Comfort Dish)

This old-fashioned Amish-style cabbage and noodles recipe is a classic farmhouse meal made with only four simple ingredients. The cabbage slowly softens and slightly caramelizes while the egg noodles soak up rich melted butter, creating a silky, comforting dish that tastes like it simmered all day. It’s cheap, hearty, and perfect for feeding a family.

Servings

6 servings

🧾 Ingredients

1 medium head green cabbage (about 2–2½ pounds), cored and thinly sliced

12 oz wide egg noodles, uncooked

1 cup (2 sticks) salted butter, melted

2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper, plus more to taste

Directions

1. Prepare the cabbage

Remove any tough outer leaves from the cabbage. Cut it into quarters, remove the core, and slice into thin ribbons about ¼ inch thick. Thin slices help it soften and blend into the noodles.

2. Prepare the slow cooker

Lightly grease the inside of a 5–6 quart slow cooker with a small amount of the melted butter. This prevents sticking.

3. First layer

Spread half of the sliced cabbage evenly across the bottom of the slow cooker.

4. Add noodles

Scatter half of the uncooked egg noodles over the cabbage in an even layer. Do not pack them down tightly.

5. Add butter and pepper

Drizzle half of the melted butter evenly over the noodles and cabbage.

Sprinkle about half of the black pepper over the top.

6. Repeat the layers

Add the remaining cabbage

Add the remaining noodles

Drizzle the rest of the butter over everything

Finish with the remaining black pepper

7. Slow cook

Cover and cook:

HIGH: 2½–3 hours

LOW: 4–5 hours

Avoid opening the lid during the first 2 hours so the steam can soften the cabbage and cook the noodles.

8. Toss gently

After about 2½ hours on HIGH (or 4 hours on LOW), open the lid and gently toss everything together using a large spoon or tongs. The cabbage should be very soft and the noodles buttery and glossy.

9. Finish cooking

If the noodles are not fully tender yet, cover and cook 20 minutes more, checking and tossing until the noodles are perfectly soft.

10. Serve

Once everything is tender and coated in buttery sauce, switch the slow cooker to WARM and serve directly from the pot. Scoop from the bottom so each serving gets both noodles and cabbage.

Serving Ideas

This dish can be a meal on its own, but it’s also great with:

Baked ham

Smoked sausage

Pork chops

Roast chicken

For a traditional farmhouse plate, add:

Applesauce

Sliced tomatoes with salt

A green salad or steamed green beans

Tip: Leftovers taste even better the next day. Reheat in a skillet with a small extra pat of butter for that fresh buttery flavor.
