There’s nothing quite like the aroma of a deeply flavorful meat sauce slowly bubbling on the stove. This comforting classic combines juicy ground beef with a robust tomato base, creating a rich, satisfying dish that’s perfect for cozy dinners, pasta nights, or even dipping with warm, crusty bread.
Ingredients
500 g ground beef
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium onion, finely chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 cups crushed tomatoes (fresh or canned)
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried basil
½ teaspoon paprika
½ teaspoon sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
½ cup water or beef broth
Instructions
Build the flavor base
Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for about 3–4 minutes, until soft and translucent.
Add aromatics
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, just until fragrant.
Brown the beef
Add the ground beef and cook thoroughly, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned and no longer pink.
Season generously
Sprinkle in the salt, black pepper, oregano, basil, and paprika. Stir well to evenly coat the meat with the spices.
Create the sauce
Pour in the crushed tomatoes and add the tomato paste. Mix until everything is well combined and rich in color.
Adjust and balance
Add water or beef broth to loosen the sauce. Stir in a pinch of sugar if needed to mellow the tomato acidity.
Simmer to perfection
Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce gently simmer for 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened and full of deep flavor.
Taste and serve
Adjust seasoning as needed. Serve hot over your favorite pasta, or alongside freshly baked bread for a comforting meal.
