Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Beans

Rinse and sort the dry pinto beans, removing any debris or damaged beans.

Place the beans in your crockpot.

Add the country ham pieces and chopped onions.

Pour in enough water to cover the beans by about 2 inches.

Step 2: Slow Cook

Cover and cook on Low for 8–10 hours or High for 5–6 hours, until the beans are tender and creamy.

Stir occasionally if possible.

Season with salt and black pepper during the last hour of cooking.

Step 3: Bake the Cornbread

Prepare the cornbread according to your favorite recipe or package directions.

Bake until golden brown and cooked through.

Allow to cool slightly before slicing.

Step 4: Serve

Ladle the hot beans into bowls.

Serve with generous slices of warm cornbread on the side.

Add a pat of butter to the cornbread for extra richness if desired.

Tips for the Best Pinto Beans

Soak the beans overnight to reduce cooking time and improve texture.

Add a pinch of garlic powder or smoked paprika for extra depth of flavor.

For a thicker bean broth, mash a few beans against the side of the crockpot before serving.
