The Dinner Date That Ended Before It Began

The Dinner Date That Ended Before It Began

  • I went on a dinner date with this guy last night — the first and definitely the last. He was a pleasant man: nice enough to talk to, decent-looking, and seemingly had his life together. But one small moment told me everything I needed to know about him.

When the $118 bill came, he tipped only $6. That’s 5%. I simply can’t date a man who thinks that’s acceptable. It wouldn’t have mattered if the waiter had dropped our food or mixed up our orders — which they didn’t. Does he really believe that tipping 5% will somehow “teach” the server to improve? Because it won’t.

What it does do is send someone home feeling disrespected after doing their job. The next table that server waits on will feel that energy, and the cycle of negativity continues. But if he had tipped generously, that same server might have walked away with renewed faith in people — and that kindness would have rippled outward.

For the record, our server was perfectly fine. Not overly chatty, but polite and attentive enough. They’re human, after all — and who knows what they might be going through?

Personally, I’d rather be with someone who tips 30% no matter what. Generosity says more about a person’s character than any amount of charm or success ever could.

What we put into the world comes back to us. Watching how this man treated a stranger revealed everything about who he truly is. I refuse to keep entitled or inconsiderate people in my life.

Maybe my decision not to see him again will teach him something. And maybe next time, he’ll leave a better tip — not to impress his date, but because it’s simply the right thing to do.
