This ultra-simple, 5-ingredient “Easter Sunday Saver” bake is perfect for making hours ahead of a family gathering. Inspired by Depression-era cooking, it transforms humble ingredients into a golden, savory-sweet masterpiece that looks effortless but tastes like you spent all day in the kitchen.

Ingredients:

4 large potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced

2 large onions, thinly sliced

4 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces

1/4 cup brown sugar (light or dark)

Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Layer the Dish: In a 9×13-inch baking dish, arrange half of the potato slices in an even layer. Top with half of the onions, half of the butter pieces, and sprinkle lightly with salt, pepper, and brown sugar. Repeat with the remaining potatoes, onions, butter, and seasoning.

Cover & Bake: Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 45 minutes. This allows the potatoes and onions to start softening and caramelizing gently.

Caramelize the Top: Remove the foil and bake for an additional 25–30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly, and the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.

Serve: Let the bake rest for 5 minutes before serving. Spoon generously alongside roasted ham, rotisserie chicken, grilled sausages, or your favorite Easter main. It’s also perfect with a crisp green salad or steamed vegetables.

Tip: For an extra flavor boost, sprinkle a little smoked paprika or fresh thyme over the top before baking.
