Golden Onion Lyonnaise Potatoes

Golden Onion Lyonnaise Potatoes (3-Ingredient Oven Comfort Classic)
These beautifully simple Lyonnaise-style potatoes are proof that a few humble ingredients can create something truly special. Inspired by traditional French cooking, this oven-baked version captures the essence of the classic dish—tender potatoes, buttery richness, and deeply golden onions that melt into every layer. It’s an easy, no-fuss recipe that brings warmth and flavor to any table, whether it’s a cozy family dinner or a relaxed weekend brunch.
Ingredients
4 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
2 large onions, thinly sliced
4 tablespoons butter, melted
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a baking dish.
Prepare the layers
Arrange a layer of sliced potatoes on the bottom of the dish, followed by a layer of onions. Drizzle a little melted butter over the top. Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a generous layer of onions.
Season lightly (optional)
Although traditionally simple, you can add a pinch of salt and pepper between layers if desired.
Bake covered
Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes to allow the potatoes to soften.
Finish uncovered
Remove the foil and continue baking for another 25–30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the edges are crisp.
Rest and serve
Let the dish rest for 5–10 minutes before serving to allow the layers to settle and the flavors to come together.
Serving Suggestions
Serve these golden potatoes alongside roasted chicken, pork loin, or a perfectly seared steak. The buttery onions pair beautifully with meat juices. For a lighter contrast, add a crisp green salad with a tangy vinaigrette. They’re also a great addition to a brunch spread with scrambled eggs, a frittata, or fresh fruit. Leftovers can be reheated in a skillet for a crispy next-day treat—especially delicious topped with a fried egg.
