Amish Hamburger Steak Bake Recipe – Easy Comfort Food with Rich Homemade Gravy

The Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is simple, hearty, and packed with homestyle flavor. Juicy seasoned beef patties are lightly browned, then baked in a rich, homemade brown gravy until tender and delicious. It’s pure comfort food — perfect for a cozy family dinner.

 

 

Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

For the Hamburger Steaks:

2 lbs ground beef (80/20 works best)

1 cup breadcrumbs (plain or seasoned)

1 large egg

½ cup milk

1 small onion, finely diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (optional but recommended)

For the Homemade Gravy:

2 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 cups beef broth

1 teaspoon onion powder

½ teaspoon garlic powder

Salt & pepper to taste

Optional add-ins:

1 cup sliced mushrooms

1 small onion, sliced (for layering on top)

 

 

Instructions

1️⃣ Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

2️⃣ Make the Hamburger Steaks

In a large bowl, combine:

Ground beef

Breadcrumbs

Egg

Milk

Diced onion

Garlic

Salt, pepper, Worcestershire

Mix gently until just combined (don’t overmix — keeps the patties tender).

Shape into 4–6 oval patties.

3️⃣ Brown the Patties

Heat a skillet over medium heat. Lightly brown patties on both sides (about 2–3 minutes per side).

They don’t need to be fully cooked — they’ll finish in the oven.

Place browned patties into the prepared baking dish.

4️⃣ Make the Homemade Gravy

In the same skillet:

Melt butter.

Whisk in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes (until lightly golden).

Slowly whisk in beef broth.

Add onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

Simmer until thickened (about 3–5 minutes).

If using mushrooms or sliced onions, stir them into the gravy.

5️⃣ Bake

Pour gravy evenly over the hamburger steaks.

Cover with foil and bake for 35–45 minutes, until patties are cooked through and tender.
