Old-Fashioned 4-Ingredient Water Pie

Old-Fashioned 4-Ingredient Water Pie (Depression-Era Comfort Dessert)

A surprisingly magical dessert born from hard times, this water pie transforms the simplest pantry staples into a silky, sweet custard-like filling. It’s humble, nostalgic, and proof that comfort food doesn’t need to be complicated.

Servings

8 slices

🛒 Ingredients

1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust (store-bought or homemade)

1 ½ cups water

1 cup granulated sugar

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

4 tablespoons unsalted butter, sliced into small pieces

1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional, but highly recommended for flavor depth)

Pinch of salt

Instructions

Preheat the oven

Set your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Prepare the crust

Place the pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish. Crimp the edges and set aside.

Mix dry ingredients

In a bowl, whisk together the sugar, flour, and salt until evenly combined.

Add water and vanilla

Slowly stir in the water and vanilla extract until smooth. It will look very thin—this is normal.

Assemble the pie

Pour the mixture into the unbaked pie shell.

Add butter

Evenly dot the top with butter pieces so they melt into the filling while baking.

Bake

Bake for 45–55 minutes, or until the top is golden and lightly caramelized and the center is set but still slightly wobbly.

Cool completely

Let the pie cool at room temperature for at least 2–3 hours. The filling will magically thicken into a soft, jelly-like custard as it rests.

Serving Ideas

Serve at room temperature or slightly chilled for the best texture. It’s delicious on its own, but you can also add:

A dollop of whipped cream

A scoop of vanilla ice cream

Or a light dusting of cinnamon or nutmeg

A Quiet Kind of Magic

What makes this pie special isn’t just the ingredients—it’s the memory it carries. It’s the kind of dessert that reminds you how people once created comfort from almost nothing, and somehow made it feel like everything.
