Slow-Baked Melt-in-Your-Mouth Beef & Onion Gravy (Just 3 Ingredients!)

There’s something truly special about a recipe that stands the test of time. This old-fashioned beef and gravy has been a family favorite since 1962, and for good reason. With only three simple ingredients and a little patience, you get incredibly tender beef that practically falls apart with a fork, all simmered in a rich, savory onion gravy.

It’s the kind of comforting, no-fuss dish you can assemble in minutes, then let the oven do all the work—filling your home with the warm, nostalgic aroma of a classic Sunday dinner.

Ingredients

2–3 lbs beef stew meat or chuck roast, cut into chunks

1 packet onion soup mix

2 cups water

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C).

Assemble the dish:

Place the beef in a large baking dish or casserole. Sprinkle the onion soup mix evenly over the meat, then pour in the water.

Cover and bake:

Cover tightly with foil or a lid and bake for 2½ to 3 hours, or until the beef is fork-tender and easy to shred.

Finish the gravy:

Carefully remove from the oven and give everything a gentle stir. The sauce will have transformed into a rich, savory onion gravy.

Serving Suggestions

Serve this tender beef and flavorful gravy over:

Creamy mashed potatoes

Buttered egg noodles

Steamed white rice

Add a side of buttered corn, green beans, or a fresh salad to balance the richness. Don’t forget warm dinner rolls or soft bread to soak up every last drop of that delicious gravy.

Tips for the Best Results

Use chuck roast for the most tender, juicy texture.

Keep the dish tightly covered to prevent moisture from escaping.

For a thicker gravy, mix 1 tablespoon cornstarch with 2 tablespoons water and stir it in at the end, then bake uncovered for 10 more minutes.

Servings: 6

Simple, hearty, and full of tradition—this is comfort food at its finest.
