4-Ingredient Fried Cabbage and Noodles

4-Ingredient Fried Cabbage and Noodles

This fried cabbage and noodles dish is a classic budget-friendly comfort meal. The cabbage and onions slowly caramelize in butter, giving the noodles a rich, slightly sweet flavor. It’s simple, filling, and perfect for feeding a family with just a few pantry ingredients.

Servings

4 servings

🧾 Ingredients

12 oz wide egg noodles

1 medium green cabbage (about 2–2½ lb), cored and thinly sliced

2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

6 tbsp unsalted butter (plus more if needed)

Salt, to taste

Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

(Salt and pepper are usually considered pantry staples, so the recipe is still known as “4 ingredients.”)

Directions

Cook the noodles

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.

Cook the egg noodles according to package directions until just tender (al dente).

Drain and set aside.

Caramelize the onions

In a large skillet or Dutch oven, melt 3 tablespoons of butter over medium heat.

Add the sliced onions with a pinch of salt.

Cook for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions become soft and golden.

Cook the cabbage

Add the sliced cabbage to the skillet with the onions.

Stir and cook for 12–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage becomes tender and lightly browned.

Add remaining butter

Stir in the remaining 3 tablespoons of butter and allow it to melt into the cabbage mixture.

Combine with noodles

Add the cooked egg noodles to the skillet.

Toss everything together gently until the noodles are coated with the buttery cabbage mixture.

Season and serve

Season generously with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Taste and add extra butter if you want it richer.
